Actually, no.  After this problem showed up with the PowerBook 3400, I
tried it on other machines, with various OT versions.  Even, after I sent
the message, on a PowerBook 180 with OT 1.1.  It always happens.  The
PowerBook 3400 is the reason we *have* to solve the problem, because it has
no other option but to run OT.

And BTW, the PPP she is using is OT/PPP.
