You'll need to make sure that both the Maxes and the Cisco are in the same
network, or have a "network" statement for the subnet they have in common.

What happens if you do a "show ip route rip"?

Or a "term mon", and then a "debug ip rip"?

The subnet mask is also a place to look - if it's not right, the
calculated broadcast address will be wrong and the Cisco won't hear the
Maxes.
