I think there's room for a mix of visible passport items and invisible
quest-completion
items that also function as passports.  In particular, I would love to see the
Scorn
under-city quest be changed so that when you complete it, it exposes a
teleporter to
a special throne room where the King of Scorn congratulates you, you are given
an
invisible passport for the gates of scorn, and probably some other treasure. 
Then
when you get to the gate, they would lower, and you would see a message like,
"The guards recognize Scorn's Hero and open the gates."
