Quoted from the V-Chip home page at the FCC's Web site
(http://www.fcc.gov/vchip/): Last year, the FCC adopted rules requiring all
television sets with picture screens 33 centimeters (13 inches) or larger to
be equipped with features to block the display of television programming
based upon its rating. This technology is known as the "V-Chip." The V-Chip
reads information encoded in the rated program and blocks programs from the
set based upon the rating selected by the parent. [end quoted text]

My problem isn't so much with the existence of the V-Chip. If someone wants
to use such an artificial babysitter, that's not my problem. My problem is
that the FCC has MANDATED that they be placed in our TVs. Making them more
expensive. Limiting our personal freedom to choose. And otherwise being
nasty. This is a prime example of the US Government in action. You should
give the above link a read; it goes on to talk about the Telecommunications
Act of 1996 which "encouraged" US broadcasters to voluntarily establish a
set of program ratings.

We Americans are losing our liberites one tiny little piece at a time. It's
too late for "1984" to come to pass, but retitle the book "2084" and I bet
it'll be dead on.

But I apologize for using this forum to rant; this thread started off mildly
on-topic. :/
