FW: SSL, was Re: MOO version 1.8.5 ?

This is an interesting coincidence -- talk of crypto on the only two mailing
lists I subscribe to.

The US gov't has recently made it easier for certain US companies to
export strong encryption, but as far as freeware is concerned, it's the
same story as before. Now that could change in a few months, or a few
years. I don't think we should hold our breath. :( The moo-cows archives
include questions and requests for SSL support over the past 2-3 years. To
my knowledge, nothing has materialized.

Because of our laws, US coders can't do a thing about this, but non-US
developers can. They should be the ones to get the ball rolling on this.
Then perhaps some day, when the export restrictions are lifted, their work
can be merged into the standard MOO distribution. For today though, a
non-US patch is better than nothing at all.
